If you are experiencing drainage backing up into your bathroom toilets, bath tubs, and showers, it is time to call your plumber. Action should be taken immediately as this can effect your health, sewerage is full of germs, so this problem should be resolved immediately.

As you wait for the plumbers to reach your location, start sanitising the affected area with a mixture of bleach and water with a ratio of one cup to five Imperial gallons respectively. While cleaning up wear long trousers, gloves, glasses and sensible footwear and make sure that your children, aging people and household pets do not go near the problem area. Sterilise your hands with soap and hot water after the cleanup. Reduce the flushing of water into the drain to keep drainage back flow under control.

The main drainage drainpipe may have clogged up, or it may just be the pipework joining the toilet and shower that is obstructed. Whatever the cause, protecting you and your family from harmful waste needs to be your first concern.

Symptoms from being exposed to drainage may include diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, chills, and vomiting. If you recognise any of these symptoms in yourself, get medical treatment right away.

Clean all items and surfaces that in come in contact with the sewage, including children’s toys, using a standard cup mixture of unscented domestic bleaching agent in every five gallons of water. You will have to throw away any items that can’t be cleaned properly such as mattresses and of course any food that may have been contaminated.

You can try clearing the back flow in a shower area by manipulating a plumbers snake tool into the drain. For the best results you should use a one quarter inch snake that is 8 yards in length. It will move more easily through the line. Sometimes a toilet in the bathroom is quite clear while the shower in the same area has gotten clogged. This is because shower sewers are typically installed level to the floor, whereas the toilet trap is usually about 5 to 6 inches above.

An expert tradesman, a plumber, must be contacted if you can’t fix the backup yourself. Plumbers will be able to find the blockage and clear the backup thoroughly as they have specialist tools and experience in this problem. If you have no expertise in plumbing, your attempts at repair may aggravate the situation – hence it is best to summon professional plumbers, clear the area and let them do their job.
