If you are experiencing drainage backing up into your bathroom toilets, bath tubs, and showers, it is time to telephone your plumber. Sewerage is contaminated with microbes therefore it should be removed and the offending piping be fixed without a delay to avoid a repeat occurence.

It would be prudent to clean the area with a cup of bleach to five Imperial gallons of water before the plumber reaches your home. While cleaning up wear long trousers, gloves, glasses and sensible footwear and make sure that your kids, ageing people and household pets do not go near the problem area. Use clean warm water and soap to wash your hands once you have finished. The less water you have going down the drainage the better in terms of preventing more drainage backing up whilst you wait for help.

Symptoms from being exposed to sewage may include diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, chills, and vomiting. If any of these symptoms happen to you or your household, particularly the young or elderly, seek medical attention without delay.

You must also clean all items and surfaces that were touched by the sewage, including children’s toys, by using use one cup of unscented household bleaching agent to every five gallons of water. Not only should you throw away food that came in contact with the sewerage, but also items than cannot be washed or cleaned (such as mattresses, stuffed animals, baby toys, and food cutting boards).

You can use a plumbers snake if the sewage back up is in shower area. It would be best for you to get 25 feet long one quarter inch snake to tackle the problem if you are not calling in a drainpipes contractor. You can move a quarter inch snake easily inside the sewers line. Sometimes in a bathroom the shower trap gets blocked but at the same time the toilet remains unaffected. This happens because the toilet trap is installed about 6 inches above the flooring and the shower drain is installed at the same level as the flooring.
