Before you undertake DIY plumbing and drains work it is essential to understand the national rules and regulations formulated by the local authority.

The local authority will definitely require you to submit complete drawings of the proposed changes or replacement of your existing drain and sewage system to ensure that your work is in conformity with local rules. If you are simply replacing damaged sections of the drainage, in most circumstances they do not need to be informed.

Whatever water we see on the surface around your home is usually rainwater. This surface water can seep into sewers, watercourse and become a part of the drainage system in older housing developments. If gully traps are fixed at the junction of the rainwater pipe and the waste water drain, foul odour can be controlled. However, the latest systems are designed in a way which separates the foul water and the surface water. If you have a modern system it is very essential that you make sure that you do not accidentally integrate the foul water to a surface water sewage system. The first thing to do in a DIY sewage replacement job is to decide the position and level of the waste pipework. Have an eye to future maintenance when you design the sewage system and always try to keep the waste or soil pipe as straight and short as you can when you are devising the layout. If the pipe slope is excessive, your joint alignment may fail. Use the surveyor’s site level to calculate the drain fall over the complete system. By establishing a datum point and using a hose filled with water to establish levels you can calculate the fall from the datum in a situation when do not have one of these measures available.

You will need to ensure that you do not impact on the stability of the building whilst installing your drain trench. If placing a drain alongside the building, you need to make sure any foundations are not damaged.

While installing a new drainage system make sure that you do not dig too long before laying the pipe. Excavate a part of the sewage system, install and test the pipework, and then back fill and compact the earth before moving on to the next part.

Depending on the depth and soil conditions, the ditch may require support. It is advisable to take proper precautions. If you have any worries, you should support to the trench to reduce any risk of collapsing side walls during the building phase. You must make the ditch as narrow as possible while leaving enough room to work inside it. Protruding stones or bricks should not be left in the base and it should be cleaned to provide a smooth, regular surface. If the material at the base of the ditch is not appropriate then you might have to bring in new material.

The pipe present in the trench should not be supported using bricks or other such materials. Such hard objects will cause the poorly supported pipe to bend or break and the joints will eventually fail. Consolidate the bottom with a small roller or rammer and provide grooves in the bed to support the joints properly. A comprehensive support should be used for the whole of the pipe.

It is important that all parts of your drainage system are designed so that all parts of the pipework are accessible to a set of drain rods. Which means that a run of drains must be installed straight between two points. An inspection chamber should be present at places where the pipework changes its direction, this is important so that it remains accessible to drain rods and they do not need to go around corners.
