Choked drains can be deflected with our plan
Do you know what the best way to unblock drainage is? Using a plunger is the most effective and speediest way to solve this common household problem. What’s involved is very clear, cover the drainage with the plunger and push. What you don’t want to do however is to vigorously pump up and down like a jack hammer. Ideally the plunger’s bell shaped head should be used to cover the drain fully, you can then push the plunger down and then pull it up again to create suction in a slow rhythmical manner. A minor blockage can be pulled up and out of the sink or drain pipe through the sucking action of the plunger. Some washbasins and bathtubs are provided with overspill openings that have to be blocked temporarily with a wet cloth for the plunger to develop effective suction.
An alternative for plunger is a chemical waste pipes clearance product, one that uses corrosive chemical to unclog the blockage of the drain. This is usually done after you attempt to unplug your drainpipe using your plunger. The solutions should be left alone for sometime as they loosen up the blockage, then you should pour down hot water into the drainpipe to clear the whole thing out. Because these chemicals can be corrosive or contain bleach you should only wear clothes that you are happy to be damaged. Putting on eye cover will be a good idea if you intend to plunge again and prevent the splattering of left over chemicals into your eye. The chemical product comes with specific manufacturer’s instructions; it is important to read and follow them carefully.
If both the plunger and chemicals fail to alleviate the clogging problem you have, then you can try unscrewing the nuts on the P-trap with pliers or a pipe wrench to gain access to the pipe. Removing the drainage trap can release a sudden rush of waste water, so keep a mop and pail handy, put a bucket underneath the p-trap before you disconnect it. By covering the jaws of your wrench with electrical tape you will avoid damaging the chrome on your pipes and it will also allow you to get a better purchase of them. After you have removed the P-trap, clean it thoroughly to eradicate any solid material that may be blocking the pipe opening. Unfortunately if you can’t find anything, the problem probably runs a lot deeper and could be anywhere between the trap and the soil stack.
A toilet auger is the best tool for dealing with toilets that are blocked,. A drain snake should be used if you are trying to unclog your sink or tub. drainage snakes are manufactured to be able to access the far side of your pipes as narrow as they may be. With the help of the adjustable handle, you can literally drill into the blockage and pull out the blockage from the drain pipe. After removing the blockage, reassemble the P-trap and let hot water flow into the drainpipe to double check it works properly. Finally, you should double check that everything is sealed properly, tightly screwed into place and make sure that the P-trap does not have any leaks.
After trying all of these methods and you still have a water flow problem, it is time to contact a drainage contractor or local plumber. There are some incidents that cannot be solved by the common householder such as clogs in the soil stack or the sewer service near tree roots or even a broken pipe caused by age or pipe corrosion brought upon by nature or some “mysterious reason”, at these times contact a good drainage engineer.
