can i remove a course of bricks from a drain service hatch without causing a problem with the drainage?
competent to do the brick work, girlfriend is worried it will affect here building insurance or affect the drainage. drain hatch is in a back yard flower bed, and we are removing the bed to refurb the garden, and need to drop it down to make it level. probably 3 – 6
should be alright if you are talking about a manhole, but don’t drop anything down the chamber
It was only put in at that hieght to suit the ground level, so carry on either raising or lowering. Oh and wtf has it got to do with insurance, those slime will do anything to get out of paying and your drain unless blocked by you has nothing to do with them.
Nobody will ever know the diffrence .
If its a manhole its easy! Cut a piece of ply that will just fit in the hole,
drill a hole in the middle of the ply and thread a piece of rope through,
tie a large knot in the rope to stop ply being dropped when ply lowered into hole,
keep rope tight and wrap it around a convenient tree or hammer a wooden peg in the ground,
take any large rubble off ply as you work,
sweep off before lifting off,
throw some buckets of water down manhole to make sure it is still clear.
Hope this helps you like its helped me Many times!
This is exactly how you adjust the level of the cover – you are not really doing anything to affect the operation of the drain itself, just the means of accesss to get at it. Make sure your mortaring is good and solid when it comes to re-settng the top as the chamber should be airtight when completed, if there are open channels in the base. Don’t drop mortar in the channels – not that you would I am sure.
The bloke who says you must ask the water board and it is against the law is a pratt. If the inspection pit is shallow just block pipes to stop any bricks or mortar going down the pipes knock off the two courses ( 6 inches) and mix some mortar 3 building sand to 1 cement and re- sit the cover. Just make sure no one uses the toilet while your working down there.
You can take it down , but make sure no debris falls into the gulley or you will have a blockage. Remove the frame first and when you replace it grease it all around to make an airtight seal with the cover.
