Before you begin drainage fitting do this

Local building laws and processes have to be complied with whenever you perform drainage or pipework repairs and installation by yourself.

The local authority will definitely require you to submit complete drawings of the proposed changes or replacement of your existing drain and sewage system to ensure that your work is in conformity with local rules. If you are simply replacing damaged sections of the sewage, in most circumstances they do not need to be informed.

Surface water is basically rainwater. An earlier method was to directly discharge this surface water into the sewage drains, but modern homes use a surface water sewer or watercourse or soakaway to drain or absorb rainwater. In a combined system, the rainwater pipes are discharged into the foul water drains via gully traps which stop foul air escaping from the drains. However with the new sewage systems, the foul and the surface water can be kept apart. It’s absolutely crucial that you keep the dirty water drainage system apart from the one for surface water. If you have doubts about your house’s drainage system, you can get help from the Building Control Department before you begin any work.

Of course, the first thing you should do is plan the layout of the waste pipes. The main things to consider when planning the route of a waste or soil pipe are to keep the route as straight and short as you can. You should not make your pipe runs very steep although some gradient is needed. A surveyor’ site level should be used to work out the fall of a drainpipe. In case you don’t have a surveyors site level, choose a datum point and then a water filled hose can be used to calculate the fall from there.

Don’t compromise the stability of the home when putting in the drainage ditch. If you are laying a drainage run parallel to the house, you must ensure that any foundations are not weakened.

When fitting in a new drainage system, you should not dig the ditch too long before placing the pipe as the trench could collapse. Make certain that the pipes are laid as soon as possible and then bury them immediately after the testing and inspection are completed.

Because of different depth and soil conditions the trench will probably need to be supported. You should avoid any risks with this project. If in doubt add support to the ditch to prevent it from collapsing. You must make the ditch as narrow as possible while leaving enough room to work inside it. The ditch base must be smooth and clean, there shouldn’t be any bricks or protruding stones around. The base should be good so you may need to import material if the existing soil structuire is not up to the mark.

You should definitely not use hard materials such as bricks to support the pipe in the trench. Such hard objects will cause the poorly supported pipe to bend or break and the joints will eventually fail. The material used for bedding should be firmly compacted down with a depression created to allow the joints in the pipes to fit easily. You will need to provide a continuous and uniform support for the complete length of the pipe.

It is very important that the design of the drainage system should be constructed in such a way that all parts of the pipework are accessible to a set of drain rods for future maintenance. The drains should therefore run straight between two points to ease the passage of the drain rods. As a rule of thumb, a directional change in the pipework must have an inspection chamber for rodding access as drain rods do no go around corners.
