Agravation time – clogged drains

You are standing under the shower for a relaxing time, and all of sudden you realize that water is rising around your toes. A clogged up drainpipe, quite disgusting and a sign of problems to come!. Or while brushing your teeth by the sink, all of a sudden the sink starts to fill up. The prospect of sorting obstructed drainage out is not a happy one; it can be messy and time consuming. But the fact is that sooner or later, a bathroom drain is going to become stopped or suffer a stoppage. The most preferred approach is to prepare ahead of time for such a predicament by educating oneself on how to fix bathroom drainage when the drain pipe pipes become clogged up.

Why Do They Happen?.

Clogging occurs when substances like hair, dust and other bits and pieces get trapped in the region where the bathroom drainpipe is connected to the main drain pipe pipe. Residue from daily use of shampoo, conditioner, soap, cleaners and other products tends to further aggravate the sticky build up. Eventually this will become more and more dense and this is what prevents your water running uninhibited through your drain. So, if you are finding the water isn’t running freely through your drain pipe resulting in water rising quickly in your bath or sink chances are that you have a blockage in your plumbing system.

Some effective ways to unblock your bathroom drain pipe are listed below.

Here are a few things that you can do to clean your obstructed bathroom drain pipe and get the water running. The first thing that you need to do is to remove the stopper of your sink or bath drain. With a bathroom sink this can be as easy as pulling it right out or as complicated a problem as looking under the sink and removing the nut that holds it in place. For a bath you may be able to simply take out the plug, otherwise you might have to take off the overflow plate in order to get at the assembly.

You might be able to see the reason for the blockage after you have successfully taken the plug out. Chances are you’ll see a clump of hair mixed with other materials just below the drain pipe. Reach down into the pipe and pull out as much as possible. If the mass is located in a region, where it is difficult for you to grasp it and pull it out, then use a wire clothes hanger to dig into the clump and pull it back through the drain pipe. Removing the hair, detergent residues and the rest of the material will surely solve your problem.

However other methods can be used in case the clog is unreachable even with a hanger. Use a drain pipe plunger to loosen the blockage that is deeper down the pipework. In the first step, use a wet cloth to cover the overflowing drain pipe, and then use the plunger; this will make the suction stronger. Then put the plunger over the drainpipe mouth and press it up and down repeatedly. When you finally release the plunger, any trapped water should immediately be drained.

However, if this method also fails to have any affect you might have to use some sort of chemical cleaner. Chemicals should be applied only after all else fails because they are hazardous and can damage your bathroom hardware.

Call a professional plumber if all else fails.

If all the do-it-yourself methods fail, then call a plumber experienced in drains work to do the needful. A professional plumber should quickly solve your problem with his special tools and equipment. Taking professional help will cost you a bit but it is definitely worth it.
